"The modern-day New York City Office of the Sheriff was created in 1942, pursuant to Chapter 44 of the City Charter. That 1942 Charter amendment abolished the county sheriffs from each of the five boroughs, transferring and consolidating their powers into a single citywide authority. Currently, the Sheriff has its central executive offices in the Manhattan Surrogate Court Building at 31 Chambers Street, and one field office in each borough."
